The Yukon Arts Ed-Venture program promotes the use of various art forms to teach curricular units from K-12 in many core areas -including math, language arts, science, social studies and design. Teachers work cooperatively with a artist to plan and deliver the lessons. They spend four hours, usually over four separate days, in classroom team teaching time. The teacher continues to work with the class during the intervening days.
The purpose of this in-class professional development is to help teachers develop differentiated and engaging techniques, in the presentation of core curriculum, which are supportive of a wide range of student learning needs and interests. Some examples of Arts Ed-Venture sessions are:
teaching geometric shapes through dance (Math)
producing an animated version of a folk tale (Language Arts)
Developing a First Nation dramatic presentation on Leadership (Social Studies)
Creating and writing a song with information on red Wiggles (Science)
Learning the geography of Canada through musical genres (Social Studies)
